The John Rae Box

In 2015 the John Rae Society conceived, designed and commissioned construction of a wooden box to hold objects related to the life of Dr. Rae and the geography and peoples of Canada's North.

Built in Kirkwall and completed late in 2015, the box was first loaned to a local school in December 2015. The box functions as a teaching and learning aid, helping teachers encourage students to interact with the objects and read the books and magazines provided in the box. Feedback from teachers and students at both primary and secondary level schools in Orkney has been very positive. The Society is considering creating one or more additional boxes.

The Hamilton Association provided a donation to help cover construction costs. Members and friends are encouraged to visit the Society's website at http://johnraesociety.com.
