Introduction

This page provides detailed assistance for persons who wish to donate securities (stocks or mutual funds) to HAALSA via the CanadaHelps website (www.canadahelps.org). We recommend CanadaHelps to anyone who wishes to donate securities to the Association.

CanadaHelps is a Canadian charity registered by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) as a a public foundation under the name "CanadaHelps CanaDon". It assists would-be donors and Canadian charities by simplifying the process by which individuals and corporations can donate securities to their preferred Canadian charity.

Steps

The instructions and observations provided below were accurate as of 11 July, 2022, when we last visited the relevant pages on the CanadaHelps site. Please inform our webmaster (webmaster@haalsa.org) of any now-out-dated or otherwise incorrect details.

We recommend that you review the steps below before browsing to the CanadaHelps (CH) website, a link to which is provided at an appropriate point in the text provided below.

1. Assemble Your Donation Details

  1. If you haven't already done so, decide on a value (in Canadian dollars) for your proposed donation and identify the specific securities that you will be donating. Here "securities" can refer to stock of a single publicly traded company, a bundle of publicly traded stocks or bonds held separately or in a fund (eg an exchanged traded fund), and stocks or bonds held in a mutual fund. Hereafter we will use the general term "securities" except where we must distinguish between stocks and mutual funds.
  2. Access the most current information concerning the investment you wish to donate. Your account with your broker/investment company will normally be your most up-to-date source. Most investors' accounts are accessible online. However you may benefit from also having your account's latest printed statement in hand, since some details may be more easily found on a printed statement than on a page in your online account.
  3. Your broker/investment company will undoubtedly charge you a fee for transferring securities to CanadaHelps. Find out what the transfer fee will be. Be sure that you have sufficient funds in your account to cover both the value of your proposed donation and the transfer fee.
  4. Using the current unit value of the security you intend to donate, calculate the number of shares or units you need to donate to achieve your desired dollar value.
    • If you are donating all or part of a mutual fund:
      • CanadaHeps will accept a whole or fractional value.
      • Make a note of the result of your calcuation now.
    • If you are donating stocks:
      • CanadaHelps will accept only a whole number value.
      • If the number you calculated is a fraction (eg, 125.1, 752.67), round the value up or down to the nearest whole number, keeping in mind the dollar value you wish to achieve with your donation.
      • Make a note of the result of your calcuation now.
  5. Find your broker/investment company's official name for the security you wish to donate and its associated stock or ticker symbol or the fund identification code and/or number assigned to the fund by your broker/investment company. Make a note of that name and that symbol, code and/or number now.
  6. Make a note now of your account's number, as displayed online or on your broker/investment company's latest statement of account.
