The Annual Membership Year: An annual membership begins on 1 September and ends on 31 August. Individual and household memberships nominally expire, therefore, on 31 August.
Annual Renewal: Please renew your membership after you have received the upcoming season's annual mailing, which includes our CIAD form for that season. The Treasurer allows a grace period to 30 September for un-renewed individual and household memberships, after which the membership is "officially" regarded as having expired.
Adjustments: The fee for an individual or household membership taken up or renewed from 1 January to 30 April is not pro-rated (reduced) and is applied to the then-current membership year. The fee for an individual or household membership acquired in May or June will be applied to the next membership year (starting 1 September)—unless the donor instructs the Treasurer to assign the donation to the current membership year (ending 31 August).
Tax considerations: Canadian donors may claim any donation to HAALSA, including a donation for membership, on their next federal income tax return. The donation is tax deductible at the rates prescribed by the Canada Revenue Agency.
Official Receipts: Our policy regarding the issuing of official receipts for tax purposes is provided on our Receipts page.
Accessing Our Donation Form
Our Contact Information and Donation (CIAD) form can be accessed via our How to Donate page, which provides details on four methods by which you can donate. The CIAD form has a "For Membership" section in which you can indicate the type of membership you want.
Donations for Other Than a Membership: Other contributions are entirely voluntary. They may be assigned to one or more of our award funds and/or "other expenses". Donations assigned to the latter help to cover costs associated with our annual lecture series. Our CIAD form includes a section for these gift categories.
Members' Benefits: What Members Receive from the Association
If you provide a postal address you will receive:
- A printed copy of the Association's annual brochure, which provides information about the upcoming season's free public lectures and our awards program, along with a Contact Information and Donation form and the President's annual letter to the Association's members and friends. These are mailed in late July or early August, well before the first lecture in September.
- An official receipt for tax purposes for each tax-deductible donation of $10 or more.
If you provide an email address you will receive:
- advance notice of our next lecture; these are sent from September to April some 10 to 12 days before the lecture;
- one follow-up reminder of our next lecture; these are sent on the Wednesday before the lecture;
- notice of, and one reminder of, the date, time and location of the Association's annual General Meeting, which is usually held in October;
- notice of, and one reminder of, other HAALSA events, such as the Annual Tour.
- an alert concerning any lecture or event that we have had to cancel or move to a different venue at short notice.
In addition, if you provide an e-address you may occasionally receive:
- an invitation to participate in a survey, administered by HAALSA or a co-host, for a HAALSA event or a co-hosted event.
Such surveys will only be administered for the purpose of helping HAALSA's Executive Council and our co-host, if any,
gain a better understanding of:
- the backgrounds and interests of the Association's members, friends, and others who attend our events, including co-hosted events;
- how audience members learned about the event; and
- how audience members would assess/rate the event.
- notice of a lecture or other event that, although not co-hosted with HAALSA, is one that the HAALSA Executive believes may interest members and friends of the Association. Such notices are very rarely issued.
If you don't provide an email address but do provide a telephone number:
- depending on the availability of time and volunteers, we may be able to contact you concerning a upcoming lecture or event that we have had to cancel or move to a different venue at short notice.
Before continuing you may wish to read our Privacy Policy.
You can unsubscribe from either of our contacts lists (email or postal) at any time. Instructions are provided on our Unsubscribe page.
It's Easy to Become a Member
Instructions on how to donate for a membership and, optionally, also contribute to our award funds and/or make an unrestricted contribution, are provided on our How to Donate page. That page has links to our Contact Information and Donation (CIAD) form. Click here to go to our How to Donate page.
After Becoming a Member: Keep Your Contact Information Up-To-Date
Please inform our Corresponding Secretary by email (secretary@haalsa.org) or postal mail, of any subsequent change to your postal or email addresses or other contact details. Your updated information will be shared with our Treasurer.
Doing so will enable us to keep you advised of forthcoming events and cancellations and also ensure that you receive our offical receipt for tax purposes for your donation(s).
